Sports Betting in Ghana: Legal Rules, Age Limit and Taxes Explained
Sports betting is legal in Ghana. The Gaming Commission of Ghana regulates the activity under the Gaming Act, 2006, and only operators holding a sports betting licence from the Commission may take bets from customers in the country. 1xBet, 22Bet, Betway and BetWinner each hold that licence. You must be 18 or older to place a bet, and winnings carry no betting tax today.
Is sports betting legal in Ghana?
Yes. The Gaming Commission of Ghana regulates sports betting under the Gaming Act, 2006, which is the law the Commission itself publishes as governing gaming in the country. Any operator taking bets from customers here needs a sports betting licence issued by the Commission before it can legally open its doors.
How do you know an operator is actually licensed?
Check the Commission’s own register of licensed operators rather than trust a logo on a website. As at 14 September 2026, that register held 86 licence lines, each one showing trade name, operation type, date issued, expiry date and location. Nearly all of those licences ran from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2026, so the register is worth a fresh look if you are reading this well into the year.

How old do you have to be to bet?
Eighteen. The Gaming Commission of Ghana sets the legal age for betting at 18, and the Gaming Act, 2006 bars just one class of player, children, meaning anyone under that age.
Do you pay tax on your betting winnings?
Not anymore. Parliament approved the repeal of the 10% withholding tax on bet winnings on 26 March 2025, and it was signed into law on 2 April 2025, as part of wider tax and fiscal reforms. The tax that used to take a slice of every payout no longer applies.
What rules do operators have to follow?
Licensed operators answer to the Commission’s Guidelines on Advertisement, issued under Section 3(2)(g) of the Gaming Act, 2006. Those guidelines bind every operator the Commission licenses, and the only sanction for ignoring them sits with licence renewal, not a fine or a court case.
What can you do if an operator treats you unfairly?
Go straight to the Gaming Commission of Ghana, since the law gives it the power to receive complaints from the public on games of chance. Its guidance asks you to email the Commission or write to it with evidence attached, or to visit its premises and complete a complaint form, which the Commission also publishes on its Acts/Forms page.
Betting within your limits
The Commission’s own advice stays practical. Set a budget and a time limit, stop when you reach them, take frequent breaks, and understand how a game works before you stake money on it. It points players toward the limit tools already built into betting sites and gambling machines, rather than running its own national self-exclusion scheme. There is no self-exclusion register and no self-exclusion form at Commission level in Ghana. The only bar the law actually enforces is the age limit itself.
